Hey all! I'm brand new here and already have a question. I bought a brand new set of Grado SR-60 headphones. As soon as I plug them in, I get a lot of hiss, even though the volume is all the way down. What is that, and is there any way to get rid of it? I'd hate to think I wasted my money on headphones nicer than my cheapies that didn't hiss!

Thanks so much for any advice you can offer!

The hiss is coming from the source or the amp.

If you're lucky, you'll make the 35,000th post. That'll cure it!

If not, you'll probably want to find another amp and/or source. That's the only way to get rid of the noise. Since the hiss is coming from the source, whatever you might do to remove the noise will also remove some of the music, taking away all the treble. It would make your music sound very bad.

Have you tried plugging your headphones into another amp or portable to make sure it is the headphone? I'm assuming when you use your "cheapies" in the same amp, they don't hiss?

Best way to get rid of the hiss is to use a good headphone amplifier that you connect to the line-level outputs of you preamp. Or pre-outs of an integrated amp/ reciever. Or to the output of you CD player, RIAA preamp etc.

you are either playing them too loud and or there is some type of surge that has burst inside of your speaker.

Ok maybe I should have said that but at the same time I tried that and it was still hissing so I figured that it was the headphones.
