Hello fellow Audio friends !!!

Some of you may know me from the AA and to those that do not, here are a few details about myself. My name is Florian, i am 21 yrs old and currently life with friends in Charlotte North Carolina. I actually live in germany, but i am trying to become a US resident. These are my systems and some of my concerns.

German System
..............
Magnepan MG 3.6R /SE
Pathos Acoustics Classic One
Rega Planet 2000 MKII

Magnepan .5QR /SE
Cambridge Audio C500
Cambridge Audio P500
Philips CDP930

US System
...............
Magnepan MG 3.6R /SE
Jolida JD3000b
Krell KSA 150
Audio Analouge Paganini MKII

The US system is unfortunatly in a unfortunate 14ft x 17ft room. After having finally found a position which is acceptable i find that my new music listening direction and preferences have turned a bit away from the Maggies. I cannot afford to treat early reflections, backwall reflections, subwoofers and external x-overs to make them sound good in the room.

I have been looking for alternatives and want to buy the NewForm Research 645R V2. I heard that this is the place to come for unbiased opinions and great recommendations.

Can you all please give me some of your impressions and maybe listening or owner experience about NewForm speakers in general.

Thank you very much

Florian

I haven't heard the 645 v2, but the ribbons are definitly worth hearing. I believe NFR still has a 30-day return policy, so it is pretty safe to try a pair. I have 2 pair of the v1 645s, one stock and the other with modifications, known as the KSU 2 (Kitchen Sink Upgrade) including new x-over and enclosure dampening. There is a Yahoo! Group for Newform that you may want to post questions on also.

I have heard the standard crossover was the achilles heel of this speaker when sitting relatively close to the speaker plane (7-8'). The speaker used to have a strong following and I looked at it with interest but, never tried one. Anyway, how much of an improvement did the KSU mod make?

Well, the mods (KSU2) made a huge difference. Prior to doing them, the speaker still sounded good, but a little polite, bass was there but seemed slow, and there was a "gap" between the ribbon and bass drivers. The ribbon was the obvious strong point.

After the mods (KSU2 being a complete x-over rebuild and cabinet dampening w/Blackhole5), everything was different, and I think better. There was more speed and slam in the bottom end, playing quite deep with ease and authority, the "gap" between the ribbon and bass was virtually gone (I don't notice it anymore, but others may when comparing to another speaker), imaging sharpened up a bit, and the ribbon became more detailed and smoother.

I have two pair of 645s, one still stock, and I will definitely be modding them in the future (or playing with dig. x-over etc.)

As for the listening distance, at 7-8' there is still a small vertical sweet spot, which you can try to enhance with tilting the cabinet and tweeter, but I can't say for certain how effective that would be.

I think there is still a strong following for the speaker, just that NFR has some new designs available now, and we are all lurking in wait for someone to try them...

If you have never heard the ribbon, you can try to find someone in your area by posting on the Yahoo! Group "Newformgroup", many owners there offer to let others listen. I am on the west coast of Canada, on Vancouver Island, if someone nearby is curious.

My comments are on the original 645, NOT the v2 (NT)
