The subject of tapering for line arrays came up a number
of days ago.

Can someone say more about it?

Yes. Power tapering is feeding less signal symmetrically to the outer (at the top or bottom of the line) drivers to contour the wavefront.

Power tapering is widely used to reduce far field side lobe levels in pro sound arrays. For near field line arrays tapering can be used to reduce sound blooming (unequal room power loading). Power tapering is best applied to the woofer line and works best for me if the ratio of the number of drivers in the taper is less than one. For example, in the Linus 2 array there are 10 mid bass drivers tapered in a 3/2/2/3 drivers feed.

My white paper explains more details.

Let me correct my mistake in the above post. The power tapering ratio should be less than 2 to 1 for best results in my opinion.

Hi Jim,

I heard good things about the DIY gathering in Iowa from Jim Holtz. What was your favorite part of the event? How did your talk go? Do you discuss tapering in your presentation?

Wayne,

I attended the DIY loudspeaker event in Dayton, OH that weekend. Jim Holtz and others have posted their observations about the Iowa event.

Silly me, I confused the two events. How was the Dayton one?
