Hi
I am the lucky owner of a pair of philips rsq8p ribbon tweeters usable from 1400Hz and up at 94dB/1w/1m. the diaphram is 4 inches long.
Would it be possible to use it with a mid line array with a suitable number of units to match the limited vertical dispersion ?.

Cheers
Andreas

The shift from the narrow vertical dispersion of the near field to the wider vertical dispersion of the far field with a four inch (.1 meter) high radiating plane will take place approximately .02 meters from that plane at 1400 Hz. You don't need to use multiple mid drivers to match that; a single 6 1/2" midbass would be quite adequate, and you only need be concerned if you're actually listening at a distance of .02 meters or less. As far as the narrowing vertical dispersion at progressively higher frequencies is concerned, that's a good thing; don't worry about it.

OK, got your point. No need for several drivers here.

Anyway would it be worthwhile trying a mid array with a single ribbon tweeter, with a somewhat higher crossover point than 1400Hz.

cheers
andreas

I wouldn't. You'd like to have both sets of elements working in the same fashion; with an array of mid-basses and a single tweeter you'll end up with the mid-basses working in the nearfield while the single tweeter is working in the farfield and it just won't sound right. The best idea is to either go all array or all point source. In your case I'd go MTM, to get the midbass sensitivity up closer to that of the ribbon.

MTM is what i have now with 2xjbl 2118 and a Stageaccompany ribbon.
The philips ribbon is collecting dust at the moment.

That's a nice rig, but perhaps a bit of overkill for the average livingroom. I suspect the Philips would match well with a pair of Focal 7K4412s or Scan Speak 21W/8554 or 18W/8546
