Hi all, I was wondering, is there much in common between planar speakers and arrays? Surface area and height seem like they would make them the same sort of. Planars are known for great imaging, so what stops arrays from having this. I always hear of arrays used for more output and spread but not so much for imaging. Joe
Tha main difference between a large scale planar and an array is whether the radiating element is a single piece or a collection of smaller elements. The advantage to a planar here is that in general it will have more radiating area for a given speaker size, while the array of smaller elements potentially will have a higher total motor strength. When it comes to imaging properly designed arrays are at least as good as, if not better than, other topologies.
