Hello I am looking at getting a pair of the fostex f200a drivers. I am plaining on putting them in a open baffle. I want the cleanest sound possible and cut it off at 100hz and let a sub take over from there. How does that sound? Has anyone tried this speaker or in a open baffle? How do they sound? Thanks phil

I have had good luck with the F200A in a TL. This is one Fostex driver that had great bass without forcing it. I seems a shame to waste the bottom end of the F200A by cutting it off at 100 Hz. Bob

The assumption is that we are building a single driver speaker. No sub, no tweeter. That requires that the single driver chosen has a range of 20-20kHz. Well, that's not going to so we do the best we can. I want my speakers to do 40-15kHz or better. In order to get the bottom I need, I need at least a 6" driver, and I find that 8"ers give the best overall balance and punch. Opinions vary, but that's mine. Bob

In my experience, 8 inchers have better midbass but suffer from top end rolloff or beaming. I have never heard the F200A but looking at the specs it seems better in this regard. I find, in general, that a 5-6 incher can be more easily made to give proper top end extension and still produce credible bass using the right enclosure/better Xmax, etc. This is why i like the dca 5.5 design so much, since it does both these things well. I also like the fostex 6 inch drivers for the same reason, though the dca 5.5 has better bass than those, in the PAWO horn. -akhilesh

I would be more inclined to cut off the top ~7KHz, and add the horn tweeter. The upper treble on the F200A in my opinion doesnt do the lower register any service at all. It has a heat that the LE-8 JBL manages to avoid. It is a fun driver though, and a stunning chunk of industrial art~
