I had the same experience (anemic midbass) with a previous project using an 8" Radio Shack driver but was surprised by the strength of the midbass with this latest FE166E project. The room I was using them in provided quite a bit of room reinforcement, so measurments are not too meaningful, but in that room I measured a slight rise between 100 and 70hz, falling sharply below 60hz. Even at the Dallas Audio club meeting in a completely different room placement the midbass did not seem deficient. Jim Denton is now the owner, so maybe he can comment on how they sound in his listening room in Tulsa. Better yet, for a truly objective evaluation, Wayne might be persuaded to go over to Jim's house to listen and provide a professional assessment.

I would love to hear these if Jim is willing. I can also do rough measurements if needed, and post them here, with a frequency sweep and a radio shack meter.

I've got a couple of 8" full range Raio Shack drives sitting around collecting dust. Even though in your expereince they last mid-bass, could you please describe the enclosure. If I build the enclosure for $40, that's still only $50 I've sunk into the project.....Colin

The original plans are on the single driver web site at the link below. I made my most recent pipes (with the Fostex drivers) about 1" deeper but otherwise the same. Using a front-mounted speaker baffle will enable you to adapt different drivers if you decide to do that later. Also, if you use two joined pieces of meaterial (instead of a single full length piece) for the backs it's possible to build these from a single 4X8 piece of material.

Hi Fred, You seem to be quite the expert with these drivers.
I just purchased a pair of M500 9 watt amps and I am new to the full range speaker concept but have been an audio nut for many years.
I'm interested to learn the Idel cabinet dimentions for a small near field front ported cabinet. Like .5 to .75 cu. ft. but I understand
that optimal ratios of demensions can be critical for somd quality. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks, Pete
