I completed them this afternoon and they are playing now, driven by my Bottlehead Paramours. Not bad sounding at all! The midrange is a bit ragged but the bass is much stronger than I anticipated. Photos documenting the construction process are at http://fredt300b.smugmug.com/gallery/147575

Very nicely done website AND driver enclosures.
Are those pipes only for the drivers in there, or can you try some other driver in there as well?
Also, i wonder why the midrange is ragged. Maybe dope the whizzer or something? Should be smoother than a bass reflex, right?

Thanks for the compliment. You can try any drivers that are suitable for that type of enclosure. Ideally you would want a high efficiency driver with a very light cone, like a Fostex or Lowther. I did the bolt-on driver baffle so I can try different ones later by substituting a different baffle with the right size cutout. They have been playing for about six hours now and the midrange is sounding much better. Just a breakin thing.

Yes that is true. The drivers do require a fewten hours if not a coule hundred hours breakin.
I wonder if you could post a frequency response for this driver, using a sound meter or something else.that would be very interesting.

Don't have any serious measuring equipment but I can check the in room frequency response with my RS meter and Stereophile test CD today and post the results.

I measured the in room response with my Radio Shack meter at the listening position. Using 200hz as the reference, the increments below 200 are:

160: +1.5dB
120: -1.0
100: +0.5
80: +1.5
60: +2.0
50: -6.0

Sounds like you have good bass down to about 55-60 HZ. That's awesome for a single driver. GIven the size of the driver, I bet the highs are fine too....

I agree that it's unusual, especially the slight boost at 60-80hz. I'm obviously getting some friendly room reinforcement here. They would sound very different if there were a 2dB null instead of a peak in this frequency range.

Very nice job on the Pipes. And a great tip on making the routed MDF paintable. Matinelli, Epstien and I had a discussion about that over in "Craftsmen".

But I'm really sitting here with my mouth hanging open over everything else but the speakers. The beautiful cabinetwork in the house, the amazing collection of antiques, and the shop. Damn! What a shop!
