Anyone comparwed these two drivers? I am hearing lots of good things about BMS, with people replacing JBL and Altec drivers with them with positive results....just wondering.

I like the Eminence PSD2002, myself. It has a titanium diaphragm and response is good to 16kHz. You might also like B&C drivers such as the DE250 (polyimide diaphragm), DE400 (polyimide diaphragm) or DE500 (titanium diaphragm). I'd say the DE250 is about equal to the PSD2002. It's a bit more expensive though, as are the other models. You could also look at TAD, but they're pricey. The TAD 2001 is a nice driver. It has a beryllium diaphragm, which is very rigid and has low moving mass. That makes it reach the top octave without going into breakup modes. You can actually reach 20kHz with this driver, and I don't know of any others that can. Then again, it costs a thousand bucks. Best to pick that one up used.

The PSD 2002 seems to be a real bargain. My compression drivers are all either JBL or Altec, but I keep hearing all this banter about the BMS 4550, and how people are "improving" the high end of there various JBL and Altec systems by substituting the 4550. Just wondering if the PI people had tried this driver.

Thanks,
Russellc

Wellll,

I've had the little 4540 Neo and heard the 4592(?) 2" coax.

The 4592 is almost impossible to pad down to where it mates well with large woofers in a Pi 2-way. Used above 4000 Hz, not bad.

The 4592, in a very well-executed 2 1/2 way design sounded artificially airy to my ears but loved by the owner. I can only imagine my stuff would be insufferably dull-sounding to his ears.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but nothing since has given me the kick of the first time I fired up my 4Pi Theatres with the PSD-2002. Not as revealing as the 2226 but mighty musical.
