I hooked up the Altec/Great Plains 902's in place of the JBL 2446's. And slightly (hah!) different horns.Same 1200Hz crossover. Same, 111 dB efficiency.
The Stenway Grand I was listening to became a tinkly upright and the voice went from warm and rich to nasal. Okay, that's an overstatement but the 2" format and great big horn creates an utterly different sound. Money can't buy happiness but it sure does control good sound!

Nothing was solved but the GIANT speakers put me off the puzzle! I tried the Mundorf Supreme .33 uF in the attenuation and there was very little difference between them and the Kimbers. I am about to try 10uF Obbligato oil caps from DIYHIFISUPPLY in an amplifier circuit. When funds allow I will order more plus 20uF to try back in the crossover. They're quite reasonably priced.
