I'm running a 3-way OB setup.

In the current configuration the mids were originally Fostex 208E Sigmas. The sound I liked; the problem was that at realistic levels I would tend to bottom them out. The xmax is about 1mm, and crossed over from 140Hz to 250Hz just didn't leave them enough room (I really can't go higher than 250Hz). The upper XO point was about 2500 Hz.

I moved to the Excel W22EX001 - I said in another post I was "rather" happy with it, which is another way of saying I really ain't happy. XO right now is 140Hz and 1500 Hz. It just sounds harsh - I don't know any other way to say it. It does have a lot more Xmax, and doesn't bottom out at any level I'd dare play them at, but the Fostex was much smoother to my ear.

That would lead me to think that maybe the Fostex 200A might be a good choice, but right now at about $700 a pair that ain't going to happen.

Anybody have any near-earth priced suggestions?

Have you considered something like a pair of vintage Electro-Voice LS-8's? I had a pair in open baffles using them down to 80 Hz and never had a problem with to little X-max. They are very clean sounding. Best of all, you should be able to find a pair on epay for under $70.

Thanks, Dave. I might just look into that.

I was kind of looking for current production since I haven't had the best of experiences w/eBay, but I'll keep an eye out for a clean pair.

Appreciate the suggestion,

Charlie

Have you used or heard them?

Are they available in the US market?

Thanks for pointing them out.

Hi,

And yes I have heard them. I tried one in some old EV Century 100 studio monitors I have. The EV’s are not a particularly good sound speaker but compared to the original 8 they were more noticeably more articulate and detailed, quite smooth and more efficient. They had a little bass than the originals but that’s not really their intended application.

18sound make excellent speakers and are one of EAW significant OEM suppliers.

Thanks very much! [message #17717 is a reply to message #17714] Tue, 05 April 2005 17:11 Go to previous message
