Do bass horn flares have to be absolutely airtight? [message #16729] Mon, 19 July 2004 03:31 Go to next message

Hi horn experts,

My straight bass horns have been made in sections in order to get them inside the house, and I am putting them together right now.

Although the carpenter has done a great job, there are a few tiny chinks where the sections meet (I can just see the light through them from the inside of the horn).

It would not be difficult to close the chinks with a filler, but I will only do so if it is necessary (the horns are crossed over at 160 hz and are hence only used for bass).

So the question is: Is it imperative that bass horn flares are absolutely airtight?

I thank you a lot in anticipation!

Regards
Peter Krojgaard

I am not an expert but I do know that all commercial products that I've seen seek to have air tight interfaces - gaskets of some sort are always used.

Any leakage will hurt the horn's performance.

Thanks a lot to both of you! (nt) [message #16732 is a reply to message #16729] Mon, 19 July 2004 07:52 Go to previous message
