That's strange.

If the problem happened immediately after connecting a cable, and that cable wasn't connected to anything, I would suspect a mechanical connection problem. If the inputs were static sensitive, then an ungrounded open input might pop the meter, but I don't think that's it. Look inside the meter and see if you didn't break the connector loose from the printed circuit board. You may have accidentally cracked something in there.

Just a thought; It's worth a look.
