I heard that B and O once made a type of speaker that adapted itself somehow to the room that it was in, and I wondered if anyone could remember which model of speaker this was?

I don't think they make this type any more.

They built a couple omni-directional designs some years ago. I thought they were very pricey for what you got.

It's the Beolab 5, an omnidirectional speaker with digital room correction and built in triamplification. I heard it at their Houston store and it sounded good, but I have the impression that you pay a very large premium for name recognition and futuristic styling with Bang & Olufsen products. You can get the same thing (digital room correction) in a much higher quality speaker for less in one of Jim Griffin's or Rick Craig's DEQX line arrays.

Thanks for this - it's useful to know that not just Bang and Olufson do this kind of speaker.

I've long suspected that with B&O you are, to some extent, paying for a name and the cosmetics.

Would you say that B&O are overpriced generally?

Yes very much so, I used to repair some of there crap when I lived in Arizona working at a hi end audio shop and there not very durable either for the price you pay. Check out some of JBL's studio monitors they have one that auto Eq's to the room where the monitors are placed. I don't remember the model right off hand.

I agree with Bill. While I never had to repair them I listened to plenty of their gear and truthfully was never impressed at the sound but sure was shocked at the price. All show and no go; thats what you get when you spend all the money on cosmetics.

HI Fred,
You are right. The same argument can be made for any hend speaker. In fact, if we wer eto compare apples to apples, in the world of high end off the shelf turn key speakers, the BEolab 5 is actually a GOOD value. Many higher priced speakers have inferior technology.

Of course, one can always DIY for cheaper, but a tat is oranges to apples. Many audiophiles do not/ cannot DIY, and just want a hassle free package that looks nice and does everything in one box!
Many of these have budgets of 15-25 K for a good system. For such folk, the beolab 5 is a great investment.

Not for us DIYers, certainly!
