Here is an interesting document written by John Eargle that compares various magnet structures and what performance can be expected from them. Each page is a high-resolution scanned image file, so if they're inconvenient to read in your internet browser, you might right-click and save them to your local computer and print or view them with a paint program or image viewer.

Wonder if it actually sounds better, or is it just that CObalt is now in short enough supply that they are rationalizing, the way most speaker manufactureres did when they switched to FErrite?

Sounds waaaaaay better. I was sold the first time I heard a speaker with a shorting ring. For me, that was a JBL 2205H in 1980.
