Also posted this in the Dungeon.

Got stuffed on another eBay purchase. Bought a pair of 18 inch Altecs (3182). Both look fine but one has a bad cone rub.

Orange County Speaker says they can't help me - no parts available. Great Plains Audio has screwed me but good in the past, I wouldn't go back to them on a bet.

Any alternatives? Any chance of removing the gasket, loosening the surround (rolled foam) somehow and recentering the cone?

Or just suck it up, eat worms and die?

Call David Miller at Speakerworks, (918) 664-6299. Run this by him and see what he has to say.

David seems to be a real gentleman - had to check parts availability and said he'd call right back. He called in less than 5 minutes.

The price is right, too.

Thanks Wayne! You Da' Man!

Yup, same ones.

They look good in a sealed box so that's the plan for now. I was considering a dipole arrangement for each channel as the next step, but (1) I have an irrational affinity for Altec stuff (2) these things are as rare as hen's teeth and I couldn't resist buying them and (3) there's only two so they'll have to stand alone in a sealed box.

As usual, a victim of my lack of impulse control ;-)

Nice woofer :-)

But why go sealed?

Theres more power handling + SPL with vented box + will sound just as quick if tuned right.

EBP 35, Qts 0.4 - seems natural.
