I have an old 1958 Crown Imperial tape recorder that I want to try to fix so I can transfer some old tapes to MP3. Right now, once the thing warms up it makes a horribly loud HUMMMMM noise.
I have the original instruction manual that shows the schematic, but was wondering if anyone knows where I can get spare parts for this thing? Can I just purchase tubes from any place? Also, the electrical cord on this thing is about to turn into dust and must be a fire hazard, any thoughts on how/where I can get a new one?

It's nice that you have the schematic. You might restore it to new condition with that. Tubes are still available from several companies, and you'll probably need to replace the capacitors as well. In fact, there's a good chance that the tubes are fine and that your only problem is old capacitors that have leaked and gone bad.
