My friend owns a Pioneer PL-514 turntable, it's a pretty nice table in my opinion, but its arm has a little of horizontal bearing "play"... Do you think is it normal? For what it's worth, it plays fine and tracks without relevant problems. Thanks.

I think that, in the absence of specs, the best rule for bearing adjustment is “if you can feel the play than it needs to be tighter.” This goes for just about all bearings; cars, turntables, tanks, planes. The rule I learned was the “quarter turn” rule. tighten the bearing just enough until you feel pressure, that is, the top race against the bearing, then back off a bit. A bit can be from 1/8 to 1/4 or what feels good. if you back off enough to feel play again then that's too much. Good luck.
