Hi,

I have just bought (together with some old records) a Thorens TD 145 MkII turntable with an Ortofon MC 20 element. After connecting it to my amplifier, it truns out that this turntable gives only very little sound and I have to turn the volume of my amplifier fully open to be able to hear something. This does not seem to be correct. Am I doing something wrong or is the turntable broken?

Thanks,

Johan

MC cartridge has output voltage about 0,2mV - do you have proper MC input (or step up transformer) on your amp?

Thanks Damir,

I got an email from someone else with similar information. No, I don't have this MC input at my amp and I don't have a step up transformer, so it looks like I will have to buy one. Any ideas?

I`m afraid that I can`t help much - I`m not into commercial hi-fi products, more into DIY "world".
There`re some good (and not too expensive) MC -trafo solutions, for example, Menno van der Veen`s MC-10:

Or LL9206 from Lundahl:

Of course, for step-up to work you must have a MM RIAA phono input on your amp - if not, separate MC in - line out preamp is in order...
