Your advice motivated me to drag out the old 1229 and switch it into another base and put a M97xE in it and now I have decent sound. Gone is the rumble and resonance of the cheap Denon. Thank you for your advice and patience

Hey I'm glad it worked out for you. Don't think twice; I'm sure I'll nedd your advice one day.
Did you crazy glue the Shure to the cartridge body? That makes a huge difference in sound.

I've never heard of that. What exactly does this do for it?

On the microscopic levels that the groove exists in even a slight rattle of the stylus body can smear some HF signals. So by taking a toothpick with a couple drops of crazy glue and gently securing the stylus body to the cartridge body you tighten up the whole cartridge as a unit.
It seems to me to make the sound a little more detailed and smoother.
