MGW; I'm not sure what you mean by quiet? The mechanism of the tables is noisy or the records are noisy? The main problem with the old Dual and Garrards is the arm; if you can butcher one of the tables you can probably put a better arm on it; you know, take out the auto-return mecahnism and fabricate a tonearm board.
My other suggestion would be to purchase an older AR XA and then do the simple very cheap mods that make this table pretty good for next to nothing. Then the price of the table should not exceed 90$ for a reasonable condition example; twenty bucks for the mods and it should sound darn good. Hell; I still listen to mine downstairs and that big fat spacious sound is still lots of fun. Especially on the older Rock/pop/classical records from the 60's and 70's.
