I have it hooked to about a three year old Sony reciever. After playing with it for most of the day I can get some sound but its very soft. I've hooked up a tape deck using the same in jacks and the sound is normal. Not sure if there is something in the record player that controls output volume. Thanks.
phono is the RIAA curve boosting the highs and cutting the lows .on play back the reverse applies to bring down the hiss .its been like that forever so you WILL need a phono stage in your signal chain

Very true. If a turntable is plugged into an un-equalized (non-phono) input, the sound will be very tinny because of the RIAA curve. But if a magnetic cartridge is plugged into a ceramic input, the RIAA curve will already be applied. It will just need more gain.
