Popping around the WWW I stopped to see if Artie Salvatore has any new words of wisdom. It seems he has encountered a rumour that Empire has returned to cartridge production. You may remmember them for their reasonably priced gems from the past. It seems they are now re-making the MC 5 Gold which by chance is the cart I use. I had my last one in storage and when I broke the stylus on my Denon DL 103 I decided WTF; let me break it out. Of course it is one of the best carts ever and this was again brought home to me and I am happy as a clam.
Well they are back and slightly re-fined with a better needle profile and non-resonant body. Do your self a favor and try to hear one. They are as musical as musical gets, they track very well and work in high to medium mass arms. They are going for around 275$; dump those 800$ carts and get something good.
For the frugal gourmet there is a new s10 derivitive called the EDR 9. It sells for 99$ and I have my order in already. The old s10 was the best deal in MM under 350$ carts around. Put one in your restored Thorens TD 165 and let your vinyl show the love.
