This may be a nit, but I have seen more silver dvd players than I care about in the big stores. Also have had a bad experience is actually owning an inexpensive one. And this post is made in General Forum because in spite of all the stuff on ART, I couldn't think of a good home for a question on pedestrian dvd players-- in black.
Transport is the other big issue. The unit should be able to keep the sound and video in sync which, for cheap players seems to be an endemic problem.
So what is everybody using here?

Those remind me of something George Jetson would own. Best item I saw in cruising around is a Denon model 1990 (I think) and I have a preference for the NAD 'look'. They are pretty rich for my blood and the rest of my setup.
Still would like to know even _how_ to look up an issue like 'transport' for a good dvd player. I expect that like many other products, no matter who makes the shell, most of these things have parts from the same place and are assembled by little elves in a hollow tree like Keebler cookies. (I'm sure Epstein will like that one.)

Personally, I prefer the chrome over black. Maybe it goes back to my age. When I was a teen (early 70's)all the macho equipment was chrome. The only components I like even better was the gold like some 60's Fisher, Scott and Knight (and others) used. In the 70's harman-kardon had a very nice pale gold that is similar to a recent JVC DVD player I bought. Back in the 80's, when all components started going black, I remember thinking that basic black was as boring as it could get (besides being hard to see buttons in dim light). It's always bugged me to see most pro equipment being black (PA gear, stereo and photography). I'm happy the trend is finally changing. Now if they's just get more gold faceplates, or how about some of the colorful stuff they had in the 50's and 60's? I have an old Bell amp that is green, light yellow/gold and brown. Very cool! Had an orange Heathkit once, too, that I liked. No pics of it handy. Here's the gold Scott amp. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/the_hurdy_gurdyman/detail?.dir=6d5d&.dnm=1ba5.jpg&.src=phBelow is a link to the Bell amp. What class! What the world needs is variety! Dave

Have you noticed that all the Samsung, Toshiba, etc etc also look like they've been sat on by someone really heavy? It's that Bang & Olafson Swedish Nuevo Retro Whatevs copycat styling that makes me wonder where the actual parts _are_ and how substantial for all of that.No replies on quality transport yet (?)
