Dear JR and fellow forum members,

Firstly I would like to thank John for his assistance and kind donation of parts.

I must have set up at least five different headshells. All of which have slightly different collars (all completely different to the plastic original) To my dismay none work 2 of them simply did not tighten at all into the arm tube. Those that nearly made it generated a loud hum or at best one channel of audio.

This evening I thought some more and I experimented with split metal pins inserted between the plastic ring and the head-shell notch. My final idea involved a ring of wire inbetween notch and plastic ring. What a complete success!!!! I am delighted since I have found a very easy way of using a none standard headshell with this great old deck. I have included a picture with a close up of the mod. Its actually quite difficult to notice.

Proof that simple ideas are the best.

I think the new weight looks great. I can relax and enjoy using it now that I have sorted fixing a headshell.

The wood work is a little battered around the edges so I would like to build a new plinth (out of ply). Have you any experience with this?

Also where is the best place to order a couple of new belts?

I am interested in any mods you are willing to pass on.

I have spent time listening to the XB1. It is nice sounding in soft way. Nothing to worry about, but it lacks a bit of bite. Particularly in the bottom end. I was using a VFET amp (known for bass) and a couple of Pioneer CS911s (with 15in bass drivers) and alnico tweeters.

The plinth is actually not bad. I will probably keep it as is. The deck really isolates external vibration. The 1967 advert is right you can strike the top plate with no effect on playing
