Anyone interested in these little beasts there is a good site providing extensive measurements and modification for the Tripath chip and the Sonic-T.

He sells a modded version but he also provides for free a BOM; a Q&A and all of the schematics for the mods. Including photo-imaged build help and e-mail help. Very nice stuff.
I can see a great system with the Pi II speakers and a panasonic portable CD/MP3 player. It shouldn't break the bank at about 300$ for everything.
He deals with the issue I brought up earlier that the amp will get a tad shrill at times. You might find his measured response printouts interesting.
