Got the transistors for my DOZ pre -amp and they shorted me two. This will get built someday. I also connected the toroidal trans backwards and fried it. Another part to buy. Nothing easy is worth having.

The pre-amp is a circuit found on Rod Elliott's site. It is a fully discrete minimal parts gain module designed to drive his DOZ power amp. It runs off a nicely regulated power supply utilizing an AC power pack. Shows good specs but I cannot speak to the sound quality as yet since the unit isn't up yet. The boards are stuffed and that was not easy since I tried to use high quality parts and as such needed to drill out some of the traces on the board. But it looks nice and if I don't screw up the transformer again it might be running next week. I built it to drive the Gainclones. It has 3 outputs. Oh yeah; I changed it from AC power pack to transformer thinking that might sound better.
I am noticing the Pi4's really like the GC's so this will be my system for awhile during the Groupbuild effort.

Hi Garman; Very nice job on the breadboard. Let me ask you, what was the deciding factor that convinced you to try this particular circuit? Had you heard one, or; of one?
What is the output impedance? Thanks, again very nice job.

Gotcha. Elliot always struck me as hitting on all eight cylinders so I expect it will satisfy when you get it running.

I'm interested.

Tnuctipun has already posted a design that might be worth doing but I'd like to see your preamp design posted too. That way people have both options. For that matter, the Elliot preamp might be a good solid state option too. John, please let us know what you think of the Elliot preamp when you're done and it's running.

Different tastes for different palettes.

I know; for a tube guy the SS thing is heresy. I wanted to see if a simple and well designed SS pre-amp will in fact, do justice to the GC's. As well as learning something of SS construction practice.
Elliott does seem to make a lot sense and his articles are informative and well written.

Aaah, but we are in the Semiconductor forum.

I've heard some very nice solid state systems. Like you say, the SET and tube resurgence is fairly new. If your Elliot preamp sounds good, it might be a welcome project for those building solid state hifi systems.
