Yes, I think your friend is right. You can see that when looking at load lines. Of course, hard to make blanket statements like this, since it would be really hard to find a PNP equivelent to a 6SN7, for example (maybe a 2N6SN7? kidding). But in general, that's the way I understand it as well.
