How do I keep my tube amp in the best of shape, in good working condition? I sometimes turn my amp on before I plug it on, is that a good idea?

Just use it from time to time, and always keep speakers connected when power is applied. Don't run a signal through them with the speaker outputs open. Keep them in a good environment free of large temperature changes, dust and debris.

The voltage across the plate rises very high. It can exceed the maximum plate voltage rating in some cases. Certainly don't apply a signal to the preamp inputs with gain turned up if there is no load.
