Re: Computer Simulation of Room Acoustics
CARA documentation indicates that it calculates using the phase part of the complex sound pressure amplitude and that it uses a grid of several thousand points, evaluating the sound field modal structure as a steady-state sound pressure distribution. Thi...

Re: Computer Simulation of Room Acoustics
CARA is a ray tracing program. It will not be able to do the LF modal study. Ray tracing methods do not retain phase and as such do not correctly predict standing waves. They only work above the modal region, not below it.

Re: Partitioning layer of insulation
It's hard to say. In general, the thinner the layer, the less it does. Absorbent material is best spaced out 1/4λ from the boundary. So to get damping at a lower frequency, you need to make the absorbent material thicker or space it away. The lower yo...

Re: two towers vs. theater 4's
Keep in mind that I've only directly compared my Theater 4s with a pair of regular cabinet 2's and these were with the old motorola tweeters. That said, the two speakers are very different sounding but both sound very good. The 2's are bright, brash, and ...

Re: two questions Wayne.
The Alpha 10 on the midhorn generates 105dB/W/M.For vented cabinets, port position won't matter unless airflow is restricted. So if the port is small and/or displacement of the driver is high, vent airspeed may cause turbulence from a nearly spaced wall....

Re: reconfig box .
That's been done and it's a pretty successful mod. Keep the distance between tweeter and midwoofer the same and it will be fine. Also, don't make the box too tall and thin or it will act as a transmission line. That's OK if you design with the understa...

Re: Why phase reversal Hornresp
A horn acts like a band-pass filter, having both low-pass and high-pass features. That's why phase shifts with respect to frequency, because it is passing through each of these types of filters. At low-frequencies, the system appears electrically capaci...

Re: oops, forgot...
You can place the port close to the woofer, but try to place it so that midrange reflections aren't directed out the port. Position it so the entrance angle won't allow a straight shot, because that will provide attenuation of the midrange in the port. ...

Re: Speaker Insulation
You want to reduce MF standing waves without changing other characteristics too much. The amount and location of stuffing is very important in some cabinets, less so in others. It depends largerly on cabinet dimensons and passband wavelengths.
