Re: H290C Horn/Waveguide
More information in the thread below, including implementation considerations and comparisons with other designs: Uniform Directivity - How important is it?

Re: Uniform Directivity - How important is it?
Based on my observations over the years, I have made three basic assumptions that largely drive my design choices: My first working assumption is that speakers with constant beamwidth always sound better than speakers that don't, provided everything e...

Re: Uniform Directivity - How important is it?
Yes, of course! The H290C is the ultimate waveguide for critical studio monitoring, home hifi or home theater applications. Its response curve is as smooth as any horn I've seen, efficiency is high, distortion is low and directivity is constant. I d...

Re: Uniform Directivity - How important is it?
I just can't help assuming that in your last sentence, you are tooting your own horn. Pun intended.

Re: Uniform Directivity - How important is it?
To offer a little more information, consider the following sonograms: First, the ideal directivity pattern would be constant through the entire audio band. A constant directivity cornerhorn comes close to this, because the walls confine the beam down...

Uniform Directivity - How important is it?
I must say that I'm in the middle on this subject of directivity and how much it matters. Back when directivity wasn't even considered by most audiophiles, I made more a point of discussing its importance. But now that constant directivity has become m...

Re: H290C Horn/Waveguide
I am not sure I can tell from the sonograms where the waistbanding takes place. The normalized ones seem perfectly uniform all the way down to 1K. is that because of the scale?

Re: Surround voicing and matching the mains
That's true, the little one π and two π speakers are significantly less expensive, mostly because they don't use a compression driver and waveguide/horn. The Alpha and Delta drivers aren't very expensive, either way. But compression drivers and wavegui...

Re: speaker location and type
Speaker placement depends largely on the type of speaker you choose. Some need to be in free space, not near walls. Others work better when placed close to walls. Some are designed to be placed in corners. Some should be pointed at the listening area...

Re: L/C/R placement and toe-in
Point the center straight forward. The sound everywhere within the forward lobe is the same, so it isn't more shrill on-axis or more laid back off-axis, provided you are within the 90°x40° forward lobe. That's one of the benefits of constant directivit...
