Re: Thanks!!
Cabinets between about 1.5ft3 and 3.0ft3 tuned to 38Hz are B4 alignments, which have flat response curves. Smaller cabinets become increasingly underdamped, but it isn't bad until you are under 1.0ft3. If you make the cabinet larger, up to about 4.0ft3...

Comments on the two π tower
Recently I noticed some discussions about the two π tower which concerned me that maybe some have misunderstood this design. It is designed as a simple bass-reflex box. But some have likened it to a transmission line because it is tall and thin. I d...

Re: Alpha 10 in thrift store boxes .... help?
Those box sizes will work fine. Just tune 'em to 40Hz and you're set. Use a 2" or 3" mailing tube and cut to the proper length. To know how long to make them, use the Helmholtz formula.

Re: 2Pi Towers
As with most things in acoustics, labels are useful but there's sometimes more than a simple tag line. For example, horns usually act like quarter-wave resonators near their lowest frequency extremes. The line between pipes and horns becomes blurred in ...

Re: 2Pi Towers
Transmission lines use standing waves as their primary tuning method. They usually have a pipe that is 1/4 wavelength of the desired tuning frequency and open at one end. If the pipe isn't opened at the end, then acts differently than pipes that are ope...

Re: Mysteries of Port behavior and design
Hi Ron,Group delay is a function of frequency and rolloff slope. So if your bass response extends down very low, group delay will be higher than a speaker with higher cutoff. Most would prefer less group delay, but it is important to realize what it is....

Re: oops
Speakers like the Eminence Alpha 15 have such high Q that they are underdamped in any configuration, yielding the response curve you've described. It's basically peaked at resonance, then falling to the minimum and then beginning to rise again somewhere ...

Re: Port
Might be good to change the port and reduce the Helmholtz frequency slightly too. But I think each of the drivers we've mentioned on this thread will offer improved performance even in the existing box without changes.

Re: another question:
There's no problem with the cabinet working as a Helmholtz resonator, whether the port fires into the trunk, the cabin or into freespace. But you're right that it does make an interesting situation. Both the cabin and the trunk are (lossy) sealed chambe...

Re: What's The Difference Between A Horn And...
A horn is like a megaphone. It is designed to point the sound, and make it louder in a targeted area. A bass reflex speaker is not directional. It's main feature is that it uses a Helmholtz resonator to improve bass response.
