Re: Surround Sound With TV Over Fireplace
Don't put the mains on top of flanking subs because that defeats the purpose. They need to be a few feet behind, below and beside the mains. Each flanking subs needs to be between the main speaker it's flanking and the nearest boundaries, in all three ...

Re: 3pi in 4pi cabinet?
They're very close in size: three π: 30"x20"x14" four π: 26"x18"x14" Only four inches difference in height and two inches difference in width. Such a small difference, are you sure you can't "fit" the &q...

Re: Subs as 3pi stands?
If putting the mains on top of the woofers is all you can do, then you can't take advantage of modal smoothing using multiple sound sources. The mains and the subs will sum the same (either in phase or out of phase, depending on how they're connected). ...

Re: Subs as 3pi stands?
You can use the subs as stands, which effectively makes them the same as a three-way loudspeaker. But I wouldn't do that, for precisely the point you alluded to: Flanking subs. For them to work best, they must be a few feet away, in between the mains ...

Notes for the DIYer
Several new loudspeaker projects have been started that are similar to my three π and four π loudspeakers. So I'm getting lots of PMs and posts asking what I'd do about this and what I think about that. Most seem to be concerned with the crossover, thi...

Re: Helper Woofer Location
The best approach for the helper woofer is to locate it physically between the main midwoofer and the nearest room boundaries. So you might want to put the helper woofer on the back, near the bottom. I sometimes call this a "flanking sub" app...

Re: One- Pi crossover tweeking.
Yeah, it's definietly better when placed close to boundaries. They work well as surrounds when hung from the wall or set on bookshelves. But if you're using them as mains on stands, you should definitely be running subs with them. That's good advice f...

Re: Speaker placement and wavefront launch
I have two answers for you, one that you asked for and the other, you didn't. First is the reason sound waves become spherical at a distance. All sound waves in free space tend to radiate this way, even if they start off as a plane wave (like from ...

Re: Speaker placement and wavefront launch
The illustrations show radiation from a monopole source with boundary distances relative to wavelength. You're right that different frequencies create different patterns in the room, because the speaker is a fixed distance from the boundaries. But thes...

Re: subwoofer use for old cabinets
Don't high-pass the mains, let them run wide open. Low-pass the subs depending on their distance from the mains. If you only have a couple subs, make them flanking subs and low-pass them around 90Hz. Put the mains on stands, and put the subs on the floor...
