Any recommendations on quality computer audio (on the cheap)?

I thought about building a pair of small FE-103E based monitors, but I'm not sure I want to wait until I can build them (since I would also have to build and amp). Plus, Fostex doesn't provide much bass unless horn loaded. So then I thought I'd just pick something up from Best Buy, but their stuff is all so cheap and cheesy (ironically enough, JBL is the cheesiest).

I may ultimately do a pair of Fostex based monitors powered by a chip-amp, but I wanted to get some opinions from the peanut gallery (that's you guys) first. Any siggestions?

That's the direction I'd probably go. A small high-efficiency driver that doesn't require a large cabinet.

Could you recommend a compact subwoofer design/driver that would match well with the Fostex drivers? Something that might work in the 1-2cu.ft range.

Funny, I'm on that same quest. My plan at the moment is to use some RS 40-1197's (cheap Fostex FE-103s) that I have and some Dayton dome
tweets to make MTM config L/R speakers and use a sub with them. I'm considering preamp and amps from http://www.dckits.com/audio.htm.
PartsExpress has something similar on sale for $50/pr.

If you're going for cheap and easy, pick up a SonicImpact T-amp.

Thanks for the lead. A LM3886 based system was exactly what I was thinking of.

The only quesiton I had was the sub, but it looks like those kits will cover that problem as well. If the speakers that GarMan recommended are less than the Fostex's, then I may go that route with the DC kits stuff. Either way, I think we have a winner.
