I've recently been reading Fitzmaurice's book "Loudspeakers for Musicians", and I'd like some clarification/help.

When he talks about driver loading, he says ". . . a throat will only fully load a driver if its cross section is less than one-tenth of a wavelength".

Anyone know what he means by "cross section"? Usually I think of area, but wavelength is length -- so I'm a little confused. Does he mean radius or diameter of a "round" opening at the throat? Or something else?

Any assistance would help. thanks

You'd have to ask the author to know for sure, but I think his statement is essentially a generalization that sets a "scale." There are other limiting factors besides throat size to consider, such as throat shape, front chamber size and shape, phase plug shape (if used), diaphragm size, shape and material, compliance and motor strength.
