What's your favorite tuner? Are there any that you would consider to be high-fidelity? I ask, 'cause I've always sort of considered tuners to be mid-fi. There's a tuner in one of my Carver Preamps, and another in a little Harman Kardon receiver I have. They're both fine, but neither one is great. Do any of you have a tuner you would consider to be something really special?

I have had some really excellent tuners in the past. The best sounding was one that I had back in the seventies, a huge Kenwood 600T. This Kenwood was just before the onset of "Digital" tuners. I found that most digital tuners I tried were subject to producing "Listener Fatigue" a phenomenon that made you want to stop listening after a short period of time but just couldn't put your finger on why.

The next best was a Magnum/Dynalab that tuned in the analogue domain but had a digital readout. If I was ever to purchase an FM tuner again it would probably be another Magnum/Dynalab.

I've been looking for a good tuner myself. I came across a very good web site dedicated to fm tuners. Try this link:

Wow - That looks like a really great site. Thanks!

Radio tuners seem to be sort of forgotten on hi-fi forums, including this one. So it's good to see a site with some useful information.

Thanks for the tip. Did you see the link below for the Magnum/Dynalab? Ever done any business with those guys?

Don't see the link you are referring to but, as I live close to the company, I have had very positive past dealings with them and their original owner. They really stood behind their products and gave great service.
I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a tuner from again if I ever get back into that market.

That's good to know. I'll check 'em out. About the link - There was a Google link for Magnum Dynalab down at the bottom of the page. I suppose they cycle through several links and the same ones don't necessarily show up on each page view.

Don't own a Magnum, but the one's I've heard, esp. with tube output stage are very nice. I use a Cambridge Audio T500 and it's an excellent "budget" tuner. I have it connected to an outdoor aerial. If you're looking for a "hi-fi" tuner, don't forget a good aerial, even if you live in the city.

I've listened to FM most of my life, and I've owned some nice tuners. The better Pioneer, Kenwood and Marantz receivers from the 70's have nice built in tuners that can be used as a separate tuner, and they're not hard to find or expensive. However, the biggest single thing you can do to help a tuner is a good antenna. I used an outdoor dipole for many years, about 25 feet high, turning it for best alignment. About four months ago I stumbled onto a BIC Beam Box. This is a little box with three controls on the front, and is un-powered. It has a built in antenna with a switch that changes it's directionality. A knob tunes out un-wanted noise, while a switch changes from narrow band to wide band. This gadget really works! It outperforms my outdoor dipole antenna while sitting on my equipment rack only six feet off the floor. I'd recommend this indoor antenna for anyone who don't want to mess with an outdoor yagi type antenna.
