My dad just got a surround sound system with a $500 Reciever. For his conveniece in his old age he wants to set up a clapper to the reciever so he can turn it off with the sound of a clap by shutting off the power to the reciever and not pressing the actual on/off button. Can this potentially be bad for the reciever???

Hmm, not sure, but I wonder how it would work if he is watching a movie and someone starts clapping? LOL

I think as long as every viewer keeps in mind that the creators and the actors in the movie aren't present then theres no need for clapping because they won't hear the clapping, so there is no point to do it. I hate when people do that at the theatre at the end of a movie. It's just dumb. Another thing to be afraid of I guess is if theres clapping in the movie he's watching ( : .

It probably won't work. Most modern gear, receivers or TVs, are always 'on',the power switch only affects the output circuitry. Disconnect the power and you have to reprogram the unit when you reconnect.

Sometimes people clap when they're amazed at something, though - even though it's not intended as applause. So there could be some complications.

Well, for me it's not practical because every noise can affect the said unit and this could cause some problems.

Yeah - where we live there tends to be a lot of background noise too. Mind you, we do not need such a facility.

So what happens if you use a TV with a 'clapper' and someone on the TV claps?

Yes, that might present a problem.

But the sound of someone actually clapping, and the sound of someone clapping on tv are rather different: there is a greater range of frequencies for someone actually clapping in the room

The sound isn't so different if the sound system is any good.

Is this not the silliest thread you guys have ever seen?
