Proper horn is "lost in Chicago" according to vendor.

Are the Altec and JBL drivers sharing the same internal enclosure?

I am just wondering why 2 different drivers in the same enclosure.

Try a Great Plains 399 driver on top with a 1.4" horn to really kick it out!!!

There are two seperate enclosures (I can barely pick up one at a time). The bottom one is 25"X24"X24; the upper is 25"X24"X16" (approx). Pics are below.

At $2800 a pair retail I have high hopes for the 1.5" JBL 2435 drivers but I won't know until I get the horns in.

As far as GPA goes, thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather buy Bose first.

What's wrong with GPA??? [message #17787 is a reply to message #17784] Tue, 03 May 2005 07:30 Go to previous messageGo to next message

You have me confused, you compare Great Plains Audio with Bose??? Is there a problem with GPA you have run into???

I have had nothing but great success with Bill at Great Plains. I have bought pairs of 416C's/902B's and just recently a pair of 399's(modern day version of 288K's) and I like the quality of the product, Bill is always willing to discuss pros and cons of application of the drivers and has had some good suggestions.

I am thinking you must have had a bad experience with something/someone.

Please e-mail me through this forum with more info, I am curious why you feel this way. I also notice you mentioned to Wayne about not using Iconic, so my curiosity if raised.

Regards, Ron

I agree. I recently bought a pair of 414-8c's from Bill, and they are very fine quality. It took a while to get them, but that can be expected from a small shop like GPA. I would not hesitate to do business with Bill again.

I was under the delusion that once I got the P.Audio 316 horns with their 100 X 100 dispersion this would work out. I was wronger than wrong. The horns were so far above the seated position you got only off-axis poo-poo. I could EQ it flat at one location, but the slightest change in position brought new horrors to the ear.

I put the JBL boxes on the floor, moved the big Altec boxes to the corner running them as mono subs with a line level 35Hz first-order filter. That will be a "movies only" thing.

With the horns at ear level, a Crown K on the 2225's and a Crown D-75A on the 2435's they at least play music now - maybe not great, but one whole hell of a lot better.

I've got to get back to working on the bathroom remodel - I think my wife has almost run out of patience with this project.

So The answer would be-to shift the acoustical axis downwards through xover changes/driver positioning?

Well atleast you have it up and running for tweakage later..

I just got the horn down to seated ear level, more or less. That way I wasn't EQ-ing for way off-axis response.

I'm already wondering about another attempt - this has had me facinated for quite a long time, but I never built one.

I've got the parts in a closet

I love the old stuff-looking back at historical loudspeaker milestones gives you an idea of where we are headed-and often it doesnt sound bad!

Funny scoop?I dont know how it will sound in the low vocal range -but many are happy with BLH

Cheers!
