Seems to result in shorter horns than drivers that require hyp M=0.3

its not what is the most popular,its what fits each driver the best.

I agree with Mike that conditions and requirements drive the design. For example, I like M=0 for lots of reasons. Most prefer exponential/hyperbolic horns with M > 0.5 for bass, as they can be made to work well in a relatively "small" size. Overall size and radiation angle are major determining factors here.
