I was just reading through some of the threads here, and I have to wonder if singing can be taught or if it's something that you have to be born with. What do you think?

Music can be taught but I have a strong belief that you need to have the natural ability to sing. If you can't sing completely then I don't think teaching can change that.

As long as they weren't born tone deaf I think most people can be taught the basics of sustaining tones and projecting their voice. Whether they would be good at it depends a lot on their natural talent e.g. if they just don't have the lung capacity, they won't be able to hold notes as long.

If you have the natural ability to talk, you have the natural ability to sing. All you need are vocal chords. But some people do not have the natural ability to sing in tune. That's what taught. How to sing in the proper tune.

I also believe that singing is a skill that can be taught to anyone. It also comes down to whether or not the person is willing to do whatever it takes to learn.

Music can definitely be taught. Just look at these singing shows where a contestant comes on with an OK voice, but by the end of the season after being coached and having vocal lessons they have phenomenal voices.
