I'm doing a project at the IBM Research Lab in Austin, and I'm working with some folks at IBM in Haifa, Israel. It's a weird deal, 'cause those guys are literally under the gun.

And you're right, the Israelites have been under the gun for generations.

Right now, a friend of my wife is in visit to us - she was born in Beiruth, Lebanon.
You can guess how she feels about her country...and what Israel (and some others, Siria) is doing with/in Lebanon...

As you must be all too aware, the politics and borders and boundaries make no difference to the people, friends and families of those affected. I still have the tank helmut of a Russian soldier that fought in Afganistan. Naturally, he lost many friends there. Sometimes I think how his country and mine were at odds when he was in Afganistan; Then many years later, my country was in Afganistan and he and I broke bread together. We might discuss how things could be or should be, but the things we had most in common were the things that were most important: Friends and family.

I think you mistook my point; Maybe I wasn't clear. What I meant was that when you begin to worry about the safety of your friends and family, philosophical discussons take a back seat to survival.

Well thats obviously unarguable. But as observers of what occurs in the rest of the world and what events impact our nation we can't help but have an opinion regarding the two sides of the issue. Thats the point of discussing these things; to enlarge and widen the scope of our understanding of these types of events.
No one of sanity would argue that our friends and families are not important to us.
