You can't use the tape output because it is at a constant level. You need a preamp output, something that has already passed through the volume control.

In my collection of 80's receivers, some have pre out, so that would be an option. I also see that many subwoofer amps have high level input to integrate with mains amps without pre out.
I am planning my next speaker project to be a pair of pi 3 subs from kits.
