One of the differences is SPL. The sound is directed into the room. Rather than radiating in all directions, it is focused into the room. There are other things that happen too, which change the tonal character a bit. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. An overdamped speaker usually sounds better. Bass bins designed for corner-loading are made this way on purpose. Woofers that are critically damped usually sound boomy. Underdamped alignments even more so.

Here's a litle experiment you can do that will help you understand what is gained by boundary loading. It's kind of fun. Put your cell phone on speakerphone and listen to it when held out in front of you, suspended in free air. Next, set it on a table and listen to the slight increase in volume. Then move it close to a wall, still sitting on the table. When placed near two boundaries like this, it will sound even louder. Finally, place it in a trihedral corner (without carpeting) and listen to the increase in volume. Take it out of the corner and listen in free air and put it back in the corner to hear the difference. It's about 9dB.
