One of the most common symptoms of a blown driver is buzzing. This happens when the voice coil begins to unwind from heat weakening the adhesive that holds it to the former. It then rubs on the pole piece. This can make it buzz or sound fuzzy or scratchy. Another thing that can happen is a tear of the surround or damage to the diaphragm itself. This is usually caused by overexcursion or contact with the phase plug (in a compression driver) or foreign debris. This will usually sound lower in volume and different in tonal character, sometimes buzzing as well.
