You can't actually see the magnets on these, but I read somewhere that they share the same AlNiCo magnet. This probably is one of the reasons that the somewhat lower Q LS-8 a bit faster and thinner sounding. I belief I remember the magnet weight as 5.6 oz AlNiCo slug.
The biggest noticable change is in both speakers upper mid and treble, where the LS-8 just plain sounds faster. Voice articulation is better, as well as percussion. There is definately a family sound with these two drivers, just thst the LS-8 is athletic while the LS-12 has middle age spread (just like me.) ;^)
