While a bandpass sub can get quite repectable efficiency, they can only do so within a very narrow band. If you can get a bandpass to go down to 30Hz (which means it won't be that small anyway), it would be difficult to get it to cover more than 1 octave, neccessitating more large cabinets to cover the low midbass region. The beauty of horns is that as well as the efficiency, 3 to 4 octave bandwidths are easy, meaning smaller top boxes.
