Re: box size for 2235

JBL 22xx series woofers are pretty "cabinet friendly." They have a habit of building a rather small number of general purpose cabinets, and using one cabinet for several different woofers. In most cases, this approach works fine. But in this application, they pushed the limits, and the PiAlign'ed box is much better.

A 2235 in a 5 foot box tuned to 40Hz is underdamped, and makes a peak at 50Hz. It's not too bad if a box is slightly underdamped, and has a slight hump that spans an octave. That kind of response curve is even described by many as being a "powerful sound." But in this case, the peak is narrow enough that it doesn't sound good.

The PiAlign'ed cabinet provides the same lower cutoff, but response above cutoff is perfectly flat. So that's the one you want.
