If you need a large capacitance value, I would suggest paralleling large polypropylene caps instead of electrolytics. But you can use electrolytic capacitors provided they are non-polarized and their rated breakdown voltage isn't exceeded. Electrolytics tend to go bad with age, so keep that in mind too.
