To me, compression drivers used at midrange frequencies sound strained. That's because they are. Sometimes the sound is harsh and gritty, sometimes distorted like a TV speaker turned up too loud. They sometimes sound OK at low power levels but quickly reach a point where they sound strained when any power is put through them at all.

Modern compression drivers just aren't made to go down to midrange frequencies. They're made to cover overtones and treble, but not the fundamentals. Midrange starts around 100Hz, and it is hard to get good performance that low with a small low-excursion diaphragm, like what is used in a compression driver.
