There have been many discussions about the π cornerhorn here on the forum, and in some of the documents I've written on crossovers and box alignments and what not. In a nutshell, the seven π loudspeaker uses corner loading which causes eighth-space radiation, giving 9dB DI boost. The bass bin works best when the alignment is slightly overdamped, which has rolloff that is conjugate of the boost from corner loading, making an overall flat response curve. Not only does the radiation angle result in 9dB DI boost but also prevents early reflections since all sounds eminate from the apex of the corner. This is especially attractive when the MF and HF sections are also designed to have a 90° pattern, matching the room wall angle and reducing reflections in the MF and HF bands.
